Ancillary Shooting Schedule

For our ancillary products we plan to take the majority of the pictures on Tuesday 13th December during period 1 and 2 of school in the morning. These pictures will include all of the shots including the band members: a close up of Chris with a fence behind him, a long shot of Michael sitting on the wall and a long shot of me walking away from the camera with a guitar. We will also get the individual mid shots which we will add together in editing in the front cover of the album and advertisement. We plan to get the other shots such as the shots of the cranes on the tram track at a later date.

Ancillary Products Plan

Digipack for the album:

Advertisement for the digipack:
The front cover of the album and advertisement features almost exclusively just the three band members in a mid shot. This was done to keep a focus on the band members and to allow the audience to connect and relate to them, and means that they will be seen more therefore growing the band image and brand and making them more known. It also allows for the audience to easily relate the band with the music. The design is fairly simplistic and not overdone, in conjunction with the fairly ordinary costumes, developing the idea of the band being normal people, making them more relatable. It shows the band to have no gimmicks and with a strong focus on the music. The inclusion of the cranes links the digipack and advertisement to the music video and also helps with a consistent star image as well as adding more of the indie pop genre feel as it is quite unusual, fun and unique. The idols above the heads of the band members adds some interesting colours and effects and resembles the idols used in the video game The Sims, attracting the younger target audience as we are relating the band to concepts that they are already familiar with and enjoy.

Example showing idols used above characters heads in The Sims 3

Retrospect Mood Board

Mood Board for Retrospect

This mood board contains a collection of images found online on the site 'Pinterest' that give a basis to the look and feel wanted to be created by our own music video. Most of the ideas include the ideas of the somewhat calm and solidarity of the rural areas, including nature and wildlife, giving an idea of freedom and ruggedness. Other ideas include the retro or hipster visuals working with the indie genre and exhibiting a visual declaration of being different with alternative viewpoints and attitudes. Along with this, the concept of having a passion for the music is also frequent. We aim to to this in order to appeal to our target audience of 15-25 year old females.

Creating Our Props

Making The Cranes

After we had filmed some of our planned shots and edited them together, we realised that we wanted to add another unusual aspect to our music video that fit with the indie pop genre. We thought that we could do this by using props in the form of origami cranes. This meant that we needed to make these cranes. To do this we asked one of our friends who knew how to make them to teach us and we then made 4 origami cranes out of different coloured paper.

We were going to use these cranes to create a slightly more complex narrative and to use them to create meaning through the association with the band members. The cranes were going to be used in the shots of the rural locations and we had a few shots in mind including them, for example setting one to travel down a stream which we filmed on Sunday 4th December.  We also wanted to use these cranes in our ancillary work and therefore would have to make some more in the future.

Inspiration

Drawing Inspiration For Our Music Video

When looking for inspiration for our own music video, we mainly looked at the interesting aspects from the music videos of  Lana Del Rey - West Coast, The 1975 - Chocolate and The 1975 - Robbers.

This was because we liked the styles of these music videos and how the exemplified the indie pop genre. We also thought the star images were shown in an interesting and effective way, and thought that we could use some of these aspects in our own music video.

We liked that the Lana Del Rey - West Coast video was in mostly black and white, along with it including some home-footage styled shots throughout. Also, we liked the star image of Lana Del Rey's seemingly chilled out persona with her on a beach location and in a vintage car. Other aspects such as the contrasting fire and vivid red dress used at the end of the video to give a shock factor and to be unique. Drawing inspiration from this, we wanted to make our music video mostly black and white with some colour and use some similarities in the star image.

From The 1975 - Chocolate video we also liked the black and white colour choice along with the majority of the shots following the lead singer Matt Healy shown doing actions such as smoking and showing his rebellious nature in locations such as tunnels and cars with the use of interesting and effective lighting. All of which we intend to use in our video in some way. A particular shot that we liked was the shot in the dark room with all of the band members sitting in a circle facing out with a pan around them with one intense bright light in the background. We look to implement something similar to this in our own music video.

Another music video we got inspiration from was The 1975 - Robbers. This was because we liked the variety of interesting and effective shot types used in this video along with there being an engaging narrative that shows the rebellious star image and the hardships that the character faces in his life. In this music video there are lots of shots which are we found very interesting in that they were framed well and capture a unique dark tone and atmosphere whilst still remaining visually pleasing and intriguing to watch.

Editing - Production Log

On this date in lesson time we edited the footage gathered from Thursday the 24th into our music video project on Premier Pro and also altered some of our older footage. We took time to consider the correct positions of these new shots, referring back to our animation and deciding what looks best. We also made some of these shots and previous shots black an white as we felt that this would fit the indie pop genre well as it is conventional of this genre and help create the atmosphere we wanted to fit with the song.

In this editing session we made an effort to add any interesting effects that we thought fitted with our music video well in order to improve some particular shots such as the shot of all 3 of the band members walking across the train tracks. As layering with changing opacity levels was also a convention of the indie pop genre, we wanted to add this effect to this shot. We did this by copying the shot and putting one on the layer on top of another. We lowered the opacity of the top layer so that both could be seen at the same time and then changed the speed of the top layer so that it would give the effect of seeing two of all band members.

In this editing session we also experimented with the 3 way colour effect, using it to bring out certain highlights of vivid colours and leaving the rest of the shot looking dull with low saturation. We used this on the shot shown below to exaggerate the red in the graffiti along with the shot of Chris walking through the tunnel. We animated this shot so that the colours would change as the shot progresses to add some dynamic editing to our music video and help create interest in the audience through attempting to make the video more visually interesting to watch.

Sunday 20 November 2016

Production Log - 20/11/16

For this filming session on Sunday, we travelled to Box Hill by car to gather the shots we needed in this location. We took the equipment and props needed of the tripod, DSLR camera, fig-rig, an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar and an amp.

We gathered the majority of the shots we wanted such as the shots of Chris lip syncing as well as over the shoulder shots of him, some shots of all 3 of us standing overlooking Box Hill using the tripod and the shots of us lip syncing and playing instruments with a pan around using the fig-rig in the wooded area. The shots which included all 3 of us were filmed by Alex. The location was quite busy at this time of day, and this specific spot that we wanted to film at had a lot of people wanting to see and take pictures of the view. As the shot of three of us was a long shot and allowed a lot of the environment to be visible, we had to wait a while until the area was completely clear so that we could get the shot. We tried to film quickly with minimal takes in order to not inconvenience members of the public.

We filmed for slightly over an hour, however we didn't get to film some of the shots we had planned to such as some of the instrument and car shots as it started to get dark and the lighting was not good enough to create our desired shots as we didn't have the LED, thus we will still have to film these at a later date.

Production Log - 18/11/16

On this filming session we travelled to Raynes Park Station from Glenthorne by walking and brought the DSLR camera, tripod and fig-rig with us.

We were at Raynes Park for a bit over an hour and we gathered shots from the two tunnels as shown in the pictures below. All of these shots were filmed using the fig-rig and were either taken by myself or Michael as Chris was our only performer in all of these shots. During filming these shots, we had to take into account the members of the public walking into the shot. This was something we had not given much thought to previously as we thought it wouldn't be as busy. Because of this, we tried to film at specific points where the amount of other people in the shot was minimal.

Also on the date, we got some of the shots from within the car as planned. We used some footage from an hours worth of driving in order to get the best shots possible.

Tuesday 8 November 2016

Production Log - 31/09/16

On this date we filmed at Morden Park. These shots were all of the main performer Chris, with Michael and myself using the DSLR camera, tripod, fig-rig and LED to create our desired shots. We always keep our animatic on hand to refer back to whenever we film in order to generate all of the shots we need.

Animatic

Our animatic for Pressure - The 1975. A story board of all the shots was created and edited into a video showing shot length, order, timings etc.

Animatic Feedback: At the start our animatic was fairly weak. This was due to the repitition of some shots and a lack of shot variety that we conveyed through our animatic poorly as we had the ideas but didn't display them in an effective way.

Pitch

Our pitch for our music video for Pressure by The 1975.

One of the main points of feedback we recieved from our pitch was that the band name should be changed from Anarchy. This was because the name is very importantin the branding and overall image of our band. Anarchy had connotations relating to the Sex Pistols and other aspects such as punk music and the 70s.

Lyric Annotation

Our music video is not going to have a very strong narrative nor is it going to be an illustration music video, therefore the lyrics will not have a huge impact on what is seen on screen. However, these lyrics have prompted some visual ideas that we could use in our music video in terms of the themes, meaning and atmosphere. For instance, our music video will encompass an uncomfortable feel, showing how the artist leads a troubled life and is distressed. There will additionally be themes of isolation and loneliness, and also showing the artists sincerity (which could be displayed in the lyrics at 'We'll bleed the same way') and helplessness. This could make the audience be able to identify with the artist and increase their likeability. As the lyrics are fairly emotional, dark and deep, for example with the lyric 'my broken veins say that if my heart stops beating', this will also be reflected in the music video.

Industry Audience Research

The 1975 - Pressure

The 1975 - Pressure

While doing research into what song we wanted to make a music video for, we eventually narrowed the song options down to Bastille - These Streets, The 1975 - You, and The 1975 - Pressure. We chose this selection of songs because we felt that the artists Bastille and The 1975 represented the indie pop genre well, and had music in the style that we enjoyed and liked the sound of. Out of this selection, we chose The 1975 - Pressure to be the song we made our music video for. We felt that The 1975 was a band that we liked the branding of as well as us liking previous music videos that were made by this band, with a style we felt we wanted to emulate and manipulate. Pressure was chosen above any other songs because we liked the tempo and atmosphere of the song. It isn't too happy or up-beat, meaning that we can possibly bring in some deeper, or darker concepts or messages in the music video. We also wanted a song with a decent amount of lyrics that could be lip synced too, and this song allowed for this too. Our initial ideas for this song is to have a setting of an empty urban town, possibly at night or with rain in some scenes. The music video being partially or entirely in black and white is also a possibility. We want to have a main vocalist and the rest of the band members appearing in the music video, possibly with the band members playing instruments in some scenes.

Low Budget Music Videos

Group 4 - Just Got Paid

A2 Music Video - A-ha! Imogen Heap - By Greg Bernstein & Joshua Moss

By identifying these aspects that have been done successfully by these two music videos, I can then apply these to my own music video too, as it will be a low budget music video with a seemingly high production value. This will be done through emulating the ideas listed above, but incorporating them to fit well with the atmosphere of my music video. The main points to note from these successful music videos was that lighting should be used effectively, lip syncing should be matched perfectly and choreography should fit and correspond with the song well. There can be a common theme or idea used throughout the music video that relates to the song or genre and the editing should be fairly fast paced to prevent the audience from getting bored, and visual effects used in post production can be effective if used when well paired with the song and what is happening in the music video. Also,  an expensive or carefully chosen location is important to match the mise-en-scene and the atmosphere or song and genre. These music videos helped us establish ideas for our music video such as varying the shot length and creating an effective dark atmosphere as is given in the Aha! music video with small, interesting sparks of colour shown throughout and some shots just being in a dark room with the artist with interesting, intense light which was also used in the Just Got Paid music video.

Pop Music Video Anaysis: Ariana Grande - Focus

Ariana Grande - Focus

This is a typical pop music video as it has a fun, energetic atmosphere and could urge the audience to dance to the up-beat song. The editing is fast paced, the costume and location are interesting, and there is a clear focus on the artist. Technology has been heavily used, with visual effects and bright colours being used. Also, the female artist is sexualised along with being shown dancing in time to her song, seemingly having fun at the same time. The video created a star presence by always having Ariana as the focus on the shot. She stands out from the background dancers as she wears slightly different clothing and is shown lip-synching when they are not, showing how she has more relevance and involvement to the song. The music video appeals to the target audience of young adults as the atmosphere is fun and playful. The song lyrics are catchy and there is dancing paired with the music which could be replicated. In addition, the futuristic vibe conveyed through the costume, make-up and location may appeal to this younger audience.
